In his last week in Federal Parliament, Member for Mayo Alexander Downer says he has one regret in relation to Kangaroo Island.
“My greatest regret is I was never able to achieve equity for Kangaroo Islanders in terms of transport costs. I spoke very strongly about it on several occasions,” Mr Downer said this week.
“We see how the state and federal government support transport between the mainland and islands in states elsewhere but KI gets no substantial support.”
Mr Downer represented Kangaroo Island for most of his 24 years in Federal Parliament but retires from Australian politics next week to take up a role as a special envoy on Cyprus for the United Nations and work as a consultant and speaker.
“Kangaroo Island people were always so warm and welcoming and tolerant of the time I had to be away (as Foreign Minister).
“It is such a beautiful place. I’m surprised more people don’t live there,” he said.
Mr Downer reflected on the changes he had seen on the island. He and wife Nicky, with small children, used to travel to the island on the Philanderer and stay at Penneshaw.
“Kangaroo Island has become so fashionable for tourism and we see so many new and exciting developments now,” he said.
He said he had been pleased to help many individuals with their particular issues and to help secure substantial grant monies for the island.
“I’ve also been pleased with how the schools have developed and linked. The standards have risen and there has been a generation of excellent teachers and principals.”
“I will truly, truly miss KI.”
Kangaroo Island Mayor Jayne Bates: “I would like to thank Alexander Downer for being quick to offer assistance, especially during the fires earlier this year. I would like to think that he will be remembered for playing a big part in his electorate.
Pierre Gregor, CEO of the Kangaroo Island Development Board: “I think Mr Downer did an outstanding job as the Foreign Minister, and was of great assistance with some issues as a local member.”
Michael Pengilly, Member for Finniss: “Mr Downer will be a hard act to follow. He made himself readily available for functions across his electorate and did remarkable things in the way of funding.
Jackie Kelly, presiding member Kangaroo Island NRM Board: “Despite his role as Foreign Minister he never neglected his regional responsibilities. His wife Nikki has also been a great supporter of regional SA.”
