Great Southern wants more consultation and collaboration “to achieve an equitable rural water policy based on the best available science and information”.
The plantation forestry company said it fully supported a water resource policy “based on sound science, consultation and consistent engagement with all stakeholders”, according to its communications manager David Ikin.
He was repsonding to the findings of a Parliamentary inquiry into natural resources management on Kangaroo Island, released last week.
“Developing such an approach will encourage environmental sustainability and economic viability with a flow-on effect of increased security for all parties,” Mr Ikin said.
“The recent recommendations reported by the Natural Resources Committee are a concern for the agricultural community as a whole on Kangaroo Island, including plantation managers such as Great Southern.
“The Kangaroo Island Natural Resource Management Board gave public reassurances that decisions involving water prescription on Kangaroo Island would be made with extensive community consultation which has not been the case as the recommendations indicate.
