The Settlement Day Youth Awards will be presented at the annual celebrations of official European settlement and birthplace of SA on Sunday July 27 at 11am at Reeves Point.
Kangaroo Island Mayor Jayne Bates said officiating at Settlement Day and finalising the winners of the Young Achiever and Community Service awards “is one of the most rewarding activities I get to undertake in my role”.
The Council’s community development officer Cathie Tydeman said “the level of interest this year has been fantastic and the Awards Committee had considered the nominations received against a range of criteria and all of the nominees are to be commended for their achievements”.
The Kangaroo Island Young Achiever award, which recognises the outstanding achievement by a young person in a particular field such as their career or sporting achievements has been awarded in 2008 to Jenny Behenna, 25, from Parndana (pictured right).
This year a new award has been included which recognises outstanding community service, which includes and involves our young people. The judges decided to award both an individual and an organisation as follows; Daniel Willson, 17 of American River, (pictured left) has been recognised for outstanding Community Service by an Individual and KI Dolphin Watch has been recognised for Outstanding Community Service by an Organisation involving young people.
